Afloat on the Tide - Book by Nancy Rich

Afloat on the Tide, 2009, by Nancy Rich and Peter H. Spectre

Softcover, 203 pages, published by Sheridan House in 2009

The lobstermen and women of the North Atlantic are dependent on rowboats to ferry them to and from larger craft moored offshore. Their rowboats may be rudimentary in design or works of exceptional craftsmanship. Once ubiquitous, wooden rowboats are being replaced by boats made of more durable and significantly less expensive materials, such as fiberglass, aluminum, rubber, and plastic - materials that do not easily succumb to the wearing effects of salt water and sun. A driving force for me was to create a historical record of wooden rowboats. I see them as a reflection of our lives: colorful, with purpose and integrity, profoundly small in an immense world, worthy of attention, vulnerable, and symbolic of a rich life story through their handsome and weathered form. This book helps preserve the memory of the now elusive wooden boats of New England and the Canadian Maritimes.
